The 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) program is a federal initiative that supports after-school, before-school, and summer learning, focusing on academic enrichment in high-poverty, low-performing schools. Programs improve school attendance, engagement, and academic performance in reading and math. They serve over 1.4 million youth, offering STEM, arts, and mentorship.
Key Features and Impact:
- Academic & Enrichment Focus: Programs are designed to complement the regular school day curriculum with STEM, music, arts, technology, and homework help.
- Target Population: Primarily serves students in schools with high poverty levels or low academic performance.
- Proven Results: Studies show that regular participants have improved school-day attendance, higher engagement, better grades, and increased motivation to learn.
- Support Services: Beyond academic help, programs often offer nutritious snacks or meals and mentoring opportunities.
- Community Partnerships: Schools often partner with local organizations, businesses, and non-profits to provide these services.
These programs are vital for enhancing student success, as evidenced by improved performance in reading and math and in behavioral outcomes.
